Thanks everyone! This poem was actually an assignment for school. We had to watch a documentary on Maya Angelo and write something about it and thats what I got out of it.

Thanks Christopher! Jihaan means "world" in Persian I believe. Named after a first lady of Egypt, Jihan Sadat. It's pronounced just the way it's written Ji-haan.

The way you repeat "simply, very simply" and then add the word hope at the end makes this poem so good. "She settled on silence" reminds me of when Maya Angelou stopped speaking when she was a child.
