The day after Israel staged a "targetted killing" (most people call these assassinations) that removed two members of Islamic Jihad and three bystanders, Mofaz took pains to state that the new Palestinian prime minister would be treated no differently if Hamas continued to support violence toward Israelis.
"...no one [in Palestine] will be immune,'' Mofaz said. ``Not just Ismael Hania [the incoming Hamas Prime Minister]. No one will be immune.''
Note that formally, Hamas has kept a cease fire for a year -- however they are accused of supporting other groups who do perpetrate violence. Slippery, but a flexible license to kill. And hey, Kadima has to prove that they are as bad-ass as Sharon ever was. They have three weeks to do it. I wonder what comes next?
In the countdown to elections, and on Israeli armed services radio, perhaps this bluster is understandable -- if the international media hadn't picked it up.
But Mofaz' quote is tearing through the international media like wildfire.
This is, after all, not a crackpot evangelist with no authority repeatedly proposing that the US knock off a South American leftist. Mofaz directs assassinations as part of his job description. Many of the international headlines are treating it more like a promise than a threat.
Military men are at their most charming when they spill over into diplomacy.
Vote Kadima! *heh*
