a few of my favorites:
at a hot springs in japan - very small town, and a rustic inn. it was beautiful. the rooms were small, the food was simple and amazing, and the people were so kind to a gaijin (foreigner). The segregated hot springs were glorious, except for the monkeys. what? i know. you get used to them.

in paris, at just about any bakery, biting into a pain au chocolat. oh, the food. oh, the food. oh, the food. oh, the art, the buildings, the gardens, the food.

in scotland, driving in the highlands, and seeing signs for sheep crossings. lovely - amidst the green...with a winding stream running next to the road. so very peaceful.
on market day, in freiburg, germany. the cobblestone streets, the sounds of the market, the food, the food, the food. i've put this photo up on gather in my frieburg article, but it is one of my favorites. i'll share it again. this woman was amazing!

in bend, OR, whitewater rafting at my brother's wedding. the deschutes river was amazing. the friends of theirs that were guiding it made this the rafting time of a lifetime - full of joy, and laughter, and one pink flip flop stuck in purgatory.

this is just the beginning....i'd love to hear your favorite places you've been. think of the inspiration!

You have read about some of my favorite places. Africa and Antarctica would be near the top for me. But, truly, my favorite place is the NEXT one I visit! And that will be a river trip in Europe in June...Austria, Hungary, Romaina, Bulgaria...can't wait.

jim - HAHAHA. yes, the rafting was the Next Day. did i forget to mention that? not that anyone wore tuxes. it was outside, in a meadow by a stream, with the mountains in the background. gorgeous!
jennifer - isn't it called mumbai now? my mom lived there, when she was 13. she's been back once or twice - not sure she'd have much to add. have you read the latest indian chick lit stuff? it is fun - all about cultural differences, etc. too fun! i am envious!
KR - you crack me up. where have you been, anywhere fun??
and you all - now i have MORE Places i want to go see! whoo! thanks.
Top of my list has to be New Zealand. It's so unspoiled, so fresh, its people so optimistic and friendly. It is said that New Zealand has the best scenery of the rest of the world, all contained in two grand islands, and it's true. I still dream of those mountains and lakes, those small idyllic towns, those sparkling cities, those green pastures, cold rushing rivers filled with trout, and vast glacier carved plains. If I were only younger I'd chuck it all and start life over in that magical place.
Hell, I'm almost sixty and I might do it anyway.
i have heard it is so gorgeous there!! yes, yes....
gillo - why did you leave rome? i'd love to visit but i don't like living in large cities. alas!
priscilla - tell us more! the food??
michael - really?? now you HAVE to write an article about this....
nathan - don't knock MN!! we lived there for 8 yrs and loved it. now, the deal is with the extreme cold - keeps out the riff raff. i wouldn't leave the house for days. who even knew if the car would start anyway, although we did have it plugged in. at -40, not much moves. maybe a mosquito?. haha...
A place that I was really surprised to like was Tucson. I have twice been to Arizona (in winter, not summer) and have become fascinated by the desert. So austere, yet beautiful.
My favorite foreign city (so far) is Budapest. Its natural and man-made scenery are both marvelous. In some odd ways, its riverside location and hills (on one side, at least) remind me of my own Pittsburgh.
mandy - i'd love to hear more about newfoundland. that too is on my list. i thik it is so cool, the culture, the food, the ocean (of course!!). wow you went to germany alone a lot. i love that german pretzel bread. still looking for a recipe. love those academic trips, eh? thanks!
