earlier, we ventured outside to take some pictures of the ice encasing nature. it was gorgeous! the crunch of our boots as we tromped over the crusty shell of snow was loud in the stillness. ice covered everything. we played for a while, and then realized that maybe it wasn't so safe. we came inside, pulled the car into the garage, and shut the garage door. when we took off our boots and coats and gloves and hats and scarves (whew!), i by chance looked out the window. huge branches were crashing down, right where we had been playing. half a tree is down by the corner of the house, where ed's office is. a near miss- like the fire we had a few months ago in his office. i think that room is jinxed.

for dinner, we quickly made buttermilk pancakes, while the electricity was on and we could use the stove. yum. the dishes were quickly washed, and the bathtub filled, in case we needed extra water (we have a well). candles and flashlights located. we still might need them.

we've lost power several times, and our cable was out for most of the evening. we missed several shows, but got out the old rabbit ears and caught some of the olympics. WOW - that snowboard cross is awesome. i am envious of their ease in flying down that curvy route at 40 mph. i read some of the new yorker, and lillie and ed played baseball in the living room, with drumsticks and a small beach ball.

we turned on the outside light just a few minutes ago, and were amazed by the great amount of ice on the trees. our huge sheltering oak in the front yard is bowed down by the ice. some of the branches are even touching the ground - on a non-ice storm day, we'd not be able to reach them, even on our tippy-toes.

here are some pictures i took earlier today, right before dusk. the greys only accentuated the ice on the dark branches. i took hundreds of pictures. i can't wait to venture out tomorrow, if it is safe enough. and i hope that we have power. i have a whole day of yummy meals planned, warm comfy foods like chili and spaghetti. looking forward to seeing what nature brings us tomorrow!

Very nice job on the images! But beyond looking at your technical work, I have to tell you that your whole piece really brought back memories of my childhood in Michigan. I remember those ice storms! Thanks for the memories...but I wouldn't want to be there! It was really cold here in southern CA today! I had to wear a sweatshirt for my daily run/walk. I think it was in the 60's.
Did you guys get thunder and lightening? I am in northern Illinois and it was crazy here.. LOUD and lightening like I haven't seen in years! The freeze is upon us now,,,
What is the relationship between the Voigts girls?
Mark Twain, Missouri boy, loved ice storms best about Connecticut when he lived in Hartford. On that count, we concur. And these photos are top notch.
Excellent work, Jessie!
I very much like the way you presented the pictures and the story, jessie. Really good, as usual.
carl - carol is my aunt!
We had a huge ice storm Christmas 2004. My poor little house got beat up bad. I think that room is ALMOST jinxed.
You saved the best picture for last, love the boots!
I guess the real question comes down to - is it enchanting for you after a couple of days of dealing with it?
