This is in response to the two word challenge by Kathryn Esplin-Oleski.
She woke with a gasp, frantically kicking the sweat soaked sheets off her. The darkness pressed in on her like a thick blanket, smothering her, refusing to let any air fill her lungs. The pounding in her chest was no match for the throbbing in her head. She groaned and tried to focus, taking slow, even breaths.
It was the same dream. The one that always left her feeling empty and cold, the one that scared her more than anything ever had, the one that filled her with both everlasting hope and unimaginable pain. The one that always slipped away. She wouldn't let it go this time. She strained to remember, to see the face of the man who haunted her but it was like grasping at smoke. The further she reached the further it seemed to drift away. Finally she sighed in miserably defeat, feeling her dream once again float gently into the fuzzy edges of her consciousness and melt away into the impending darkness.
Laying her head back on her pillow she thought groggily "next time...it won't be so fuzzy next time..." as she drifted back into her restless slumber.
