I want to say thanks to Brian Westbye and his article "questions for the common man". The title of this article is one of those questions. And one that we could stand to have a bit of discussion on, I think. I am Asking not Telling, but I have some ideas. I think we should be defenders of the weak. I think that to be effective at that we must be strong. Strong enough to pay the cost of providing harbor for the weak. Strong enough enough to say no to those who would abuse us. Strong enough to say yes to those who would join us. Strong enough to pay the cost of finding the right thing to do. Strong enough to pay the cost of doing the right thing. Frankly we have not demonstrated any of those strengths as country for a long time. Probably since the second world war. Our record there was far from perfect (look at what we did to our own who were not caucasian), but we did show that we could give on an individual level for the percieved common good. Have we ever been perfect, will we ever be perfect? Of course not! But I think we were better once as a country and we can be again.

"Frankly we have not demonstrated any of those strengths as country for a long time."
and why is that?
the communal goal that you refer to was the Cold War - and the scam of mutally-assured destruction.
are you sure this post isn't really a sly attempt to justify the invasion of iraq? since it's not working out so well now, i mean. help the little guy. also, since war is a direct result of capitalism and the workings of an industrial-military agenda - it would be time to reverse course.

sandy - how about fema cutting the housing aid for katrina victims, and on the same day a report comes out detailing the massive accounting errors, wasted billions and likely fraud surrounding the whole thing? imagine being from baton rouge, new orleans or gulfport - getting evicted from a hotel today, and this morning's free copy of USA Today on the doorstep reads:
Audits: Millions of dollars in Katrina aid wasted
not good.
Martin you are perhaps to young to know better I suppose and it would seem that perhaps you still haven't learned to read; However in response to your statement
"No it wasn't "
As to the second part of your comment directed at me, clearly you have not or can not read my views on the Iraq war.
Please explain the part of MAD that was and is a 'scam'.
cash cow.
and a lot of taxpayer money going into contractor pockets.
