Miriam
my mother
is seventy five years today.
Taught me to eat my meat
fried my liver in onion,
sqeezed me grapes to drink,
showed me a woman does not
always have to be
neat.
laying on her pillows
she reads her thick detective novels
and forms conspiracy theories
she releases to the world
in small doses.
Miriam swims and exercises
and travels to see her
daughters across the sea
she is the ambassador
of motherhood
the visiting nurse.
Miriam is my mother
throughtout the day
and all through the night.
she leaves her footprints
in every place in my life
in the snowiest of fields
in the sandiest of deserts
she is always present
in my very being:
every place i go
every song i sing.
