Much of the Islamic world was in a frenzy over the publication of 30 cartoons satirically portraying the Prophet Mohammed's visage.
One Danish company that sells food in the middle east suspended operations, as the boycott of Danish goods is nearly total. Danish papers were burned, and groceries were cast like garbage into the streets.
The cartoons, which were first published at the end of last September, were inspired by a western author who said no one would dare to illustrate his biography of the prophet. Portraying the visage of a person, particularly the prophet, is considered to be blasphemous and to encourage idolatry. The images were republished on a web site in Norway this past week, and ran like fire through the Islamic press.

Many news outlets are comparing this furor to the publication of Rushdie's Satanic Verses in 1988.
