Blazing contrast to
White snow
In evergreen
Puffed up in this cold
Black mask hides watchful eyes
He muches, then flies off
Makes way for snowbirds who
Share the perch and
Peck their breakfast
Cardinal searches snowy ground for
Seeds spilled out
Sparrow and titmous
Claim their treasures then
Fly up to eat on higher branches
Snow swirls round
Squirrell gathers walnuts
Twitching tail
Blue Jay jockeys for position
Claims peanut
Unchallenged
Chicadee flits and peeps
Winter dance
Amongst
Snowflake and seed
This is my joy as
I ready the sink.
Mountain of dishes and pans.
I don't mind this task
Sure, it's a chore which,
Piled up,
Will take a while.
But there is beauty in this.
I appreciate these dishes
Silver and pans.
They do, after all,
Represent sustenance.
With them
We take our meals together....
Companionship.

As gently I scrub,
I see
Rainbows in
Foamy bubbles
Shimmering from
Window's light.
I tenderly dry and stack
Cups and plates,
Gaze out at the birds and
Smile.
