There once was a man in the White House
Who just didn't quite understand
You cannot make peace with a nation
With jokes about bombing their land
You can't solve our mass unemployment
By giving us all part time work
You can't lead a nation to prosper
When the head of the state is a jerk
There was a first lady named Nancy
Who knew her old man was inept
So, smiling, she staged a diversion
As into the limelight she lept
She waged her own war, like her husband's
But hers was the enemy drugs
She wants us to all remain sober
While Ronnie deploys all his thugs
So I say, Just say no to Nancy
And Ronnie, well, who of us knows
How cancerous growths in his anus
Were found to have spread to his nose?

If you think this is harsh, let's take a trip together down memory lane, shall we?
1) threats about bombing their land.....
During a 1984 press conference microphone check, he joked about Moscow...
"My fellow Americans, I'm pleased to tell you today that I've signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes."
2) mass unemployment and part time work solution.....
In 1982, responding to questions regarding the 17% black unemployment rate...
"in this time of great unemployment," Sunday's paper had "24 full pages of ... employers looking for employees," although the jobs were mostly part time, or jobs requiring special training, which his administration had cut funds for by 30%.
3) the head of the state is a jerk...
Too numerous to mention all the reasons, here are a few:
a) In October of 1980, Reagan responded to a letter from the air traffic controllers union that, if elected president, he would " take whatever steps are necessary to provide our air traffic controllers with the most modern equipment available and to adjust staff levels and work days so that they are commensurate with achieving a maximum degree of public safety...." Yet after his election when the controllers went on strike, he issued an ultimatum and those who continued striking were fired. Now there were only 2/3 the needed controllers to keep the air traffic safe, and when it was suggested the fired workers should be rehired to maintain public air safety, Reagan refused.
b)Reagan referred to Russia as The Evil Empire
c) Welfare fraud stories which he made up ... his excuse for a war on the poor... see Welfare Queens.
4) her old man was inept and war, like her husband's...
Ronald Reagan waged an illegal war and scandal resulted because he funded this war by selling arms secretly to Iran!
5) Just say no to Nancy.....Nancy Reagan began a Just Say No to drugs campaign which was the beginning of the school Dare programs.
6) Cancerous growths... anus 1984 nose 1987
And the legacy continues.........

Spare me. No need for you to reveal who's thug like, mindless policies you support today.
Reagan was one one of our best. My reaction to your article?A really sorry piece

I find it sorry that so many with your mind-set feel Reagan was one of the best. Propaganda does its job on some I suppose.
Hatefulness? Hardly! I do not hate this man or this lady. Sorry you interpret it that way.
"The Iranian thugs who were holding our Embassy gave in and released the hostages the day he became President. That is called being taken seriously"
Are you not aware of the history here? Jimmy Carter had already negotiated the hostages' release, but it was the Reagan camp who promised arms delivery if the Iranians would delay the release until after Reagan took office.
The key players here were Richard Allen (Reagan's foreign policy advisor), Robert McFarlane, Mansur Rafisadeh (former chief of SAVAK, the shah's secret police), Abol Hassan Bani-Sadr (president of Iran at the time of the deal), Hashimi Rafsanjani speaker of the Iranian Parliament, who was also the main contact in the secret arms trading with Iran later revealed after the Iran-Contra scandal.
As far a Jimmy Carter goes, he did negotiate release, and is now building houses for the homeless. Do you hate him?
I absolutely am amazed at the level of hatred and bullying I am getting for this piece. But it really is kind of funny, I guess. Lets me know not everybody haas a sense of humor.
it's an incorrect one, but it says a lot about you.
it's all about the bush family, folks. they even tried to kill reagan, for crying out loud.
No one hates anyone here. You just opened a can of worms, and everyone is having to eat one or two.
Russia WAS an evil empire when Reagan made the comment. Seventy years of Bolshevism, Nightime police raids on innocent people, prison for even thinking about saying anything about the government. Let's write a limerick on Roosevelt who called Joe Stalin "Uncle Joe". Do we need a history lesson on Joe?
The air traffic mention is a non issue. The number of plane mishaps resulting from faulty equipment could be listed in the same book with "whos who amoung Pigmy Giants".
So If you write this stuff, be prepared. You're gonna get it from someone.
Blessings
David
I never cared for him as a president or an actor. I giggled at your limerick... keep it up.
Where's my worm?
And who says Texans want him back???
The fall out surprised me as I was not prepared for it, that's all.
I am glad for the dialogue. As far as anything being a "non-issue", this was just something I wrote in the 80s meant as humorous political commentary.
It is important when discussing the past however to, as Harry said, learn from it. I believe we've all moved on, Harry!
By the way, when you say, "Offer suggestions for the future that don't put us in perril.
Whose fault? Did you vote? Have you a plan?"
I wrote a limerick which poked fun at Reagan's foibles and folly.
My suggestions are, if you really want to know, be honorable. If you make a mistake, admit it. Not just Republicans, but Democrats and everybody.
Fault? I though you said "assigning blame is a complete wast
of time."
Did I vote? Hell yes!
Have I a plan? Hell no! That's why I merely write and stir up conversation. I am not one to be called on for a plan, for pity sake!
I would call for dialogue, however, and I adore the fact we are all thinking and having this discourse!
Like most political subjects, people are split over Reagan, his actions and hjis policies. It's a shame that some have responded to this piece with personal attacks and name calling.
While I agree with you about The Gipper, I'd gladly have him back in place of our current fearless-leader.
Thanks for provoking the conversation.
Cathy and Carl, I was caught off guard with the responses..... This was not at all like the reception in the 80's when I wrote it!
I'm glad for the discussion...... it's wonderful to hear other opinions, don't you think?
