A report out this morning from the US Census Bureau shows the federal government spent $2.2 trillion in 2004, up 5% from the previous years. If you think Congressional favorites like defense programs accounted for the majority of that spending, guess again. Hilary Wicai has more.

I was listening to NPR this morning on Morning Edition and it was stated that a full 45% of what the federal government spent this year was on Soc. Sec., Medicare and Medicaid. Baby boomers are starting to retire, the population is aging, this isn't going to get better anytime soon. Minimal budget cuts offset by even larger spending packages aren't going to solve this problem, neither is more tax cuts for the wealthy. The only way this gets solved is increasing revenue (ie: tax hikes). This isn't popular but you have to be able to pay for the services you expect to receive!
