Lieberman continues to get it right.
WASHINGTON — Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman, increasingly isolated in his own Democratic party because of his strong support for the Iraq war, today called on the White House and congressional leaders to form a special "war cabinet" to provide advice and direction for the war effort.
The Connecticut Democrat's "Bipartisan Victory in Iraq Administrative Group," designed to take some of the political edge off the war debate, would be modeled after similar panels during the Vietnam War and World War II.
Lieberman, whom the Bush administration has praised repeatedly for his war stance, defended the president. "It's time for Democrats who distrust President Bush to acknowledge he'll be commander-in-chief for three more years," the senator said. "We undermine the president's credibility at our nation's peril."
I couldn't agree more. Which isn't to say that I think dissent about the war should be silenced. Far from it. There is plenty of room for criticism about how this war has been prosecuted, but when you have the leader of one of the nation's two most powerful political parties telling the world that we cannot win in Iraq we have a problem. Especially when its clear that Dean and other Democrats are only saying these things because it is politically expedient for them to do so.
Take Democrat House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, for instance. The last I heard she was busy backing Democrat John Murtha's calls for immediate withdrawal from Iraq because our military is tired and "worn out," yet just before that she voted against a House measure to pull our troops out immediately.
What gives? If we can't win why leave our troops in Iraq even one day longer? If we can, why pull out at all? Especially in light of fact that Iraq would likely sink back into the depths of oppression and become a terror-fostering rogue state once again.
The Democrats have it all wrong on Iraq, and they have it all wrong because they're focusing on winning the next election here in America rather than winning the war in Iraq.

And literate.
The same could be said of your posts and your literacy.
I would differ with your conclusion that dissent undermines the President's credibility. The President,Vice President Cheney,Secretaries of State Powell and Rice,Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld,Under Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz, Richard Perle,Doug Feith,Richard Bolton all have destroyed the credibility of the United States.
It is those who oppose and expose the lies, torture and real reason for invading Iraq that will restore the United States' credibility to what it was and what made this country great.
Please, please do not be critical of those who believe that truth, candor and honest debate will restore the confidence in American ideals that existed before President Bush and his advisors took office.
Seth,
I did appreciate your article about the use of the term chickenhawks. I did not intend to stifle debate by using the term, rather call attention to those who are so quick advocate the use of military intervention not having the personal experience of combat, especially when diplomacy is a more effective and lasting resolution. If the Iraq invasion was truly a defensive manuver, the use of the term "chickenhawks" would have been inappropriate.
Proof please.
You, and Lieberman, ask us to trust someone who's lied to us, even though an appointed President (and, if not appointed, paid for by the plutocracy who placed him, and, I can't help but add that Lieberman and most Democrats also seem powerless against their own economic interests to stand up for their own party!).
Finally, even if we grant you, and the President, and Lieberman, and everyone else who seems bent on extorting our 'patriotism' and 'allegiance to the flag' success in this 'expedition' in Iraq, the best we can hope for is the establishment of some Oil-elite Iraqis, sitting by their swimming pools and presidential palaces in Baghadad some years hence, inviting the few Texan Oil barons to their lavish parties, while the West Virginian soldier (among countless other wounded across the country) struggle to make ends meet. God help them find a job and earn a decent living here when they come back after securing the Iraqi upper-class their wealth and station in the Global economy!
