PHOENIX - Republicans plan to use the vast problems caused by illegal immigration to try and divide Americans voting in next year's midterm election, Democratic National Committee chairman
Howard Dean said Saturday."Once again, the Republicans created problems so they think they can come in and solve them," Dean told DNC members meeting in Phoenix.
Republicans created the illegal immigration problem? I don't see how that can be true. For the most part I think the illegal immigration problem is caused by the terrible poverty and corruption down in Mexico. If these people had the freedom and opportunity to work and live in a manner they find appealing down in Mexico they probably wouldn't be fighting to hard to get across our border. Though I would point out that part of the incentive to come here (menial jobs American businesses can't afford to hire Americans for) has been caused by the artificially inflated wages and burdensome regulation foisted upon businesses by leftist labor unions and politicians.
But then, who expected anything more than "Republicans suck" from Howard Dean?
Sadly, though, neither party really has it right on illegal immigration. They both seem to be pushing different versions of the same plan:
President Bush has urged Congress to let illegal immigrants get three-year work visas that could be extended for an additional three years. Then, they would have to return home for a year to apply for a new work permit.
Dean said the government should have an "earned legalization" program in which immigrants who contribute to society and pay taxes should be able to earn the right to become citizens.
Here's a thought: Why don't we just streamline the process for becoming a citizen? Lets clamp down on our borders and the businesses who hire illegal immigrants while simultaneously making it a lot easier for more immigrants from Mexico to move here legally and obtain citizenship? Creating a subclass of pseudo-citizens who have a vested interest in our economy but no loyalty to our society and our way of life is dangerous.
France has been paying the price for not assimilating immigrants properly, and paying for it by staring down the barrel of wide-spread insurgency. I don't think we need to go down that same road. America has additional protections against what happened in France (our rejection of the mostly socialist "European model" of economics, for one thing), but I still think that anything even resembling a "guest worker program" is flirting with disaster.

Illegal immigrants now make up 10 percent of U.S. population, except in California, which is already 40% Mexican. I live in a county that is at least 75 percent Mexican, with some
Vietnamese and Punjabi and a few others thrown in. A few are actually legal.
PS.
U.S. people did not create the problem. The very real fact that U.S. Businesses who wanted cheap expendable labor did. Hey if you can hire someone you can pay or not pay at whim, pay no social secutity tax for, no unemployment insurance for, no workers compemsation insurance for, no health insurance, no vacation, no paid holidays, no overtime pay. . . . and fire when ever with no severance pay . . . . . .and have the blessing of your own government, well . . . . I hope your children have a college education. If not they are going to have to compete in the slave labor work force of illegal immigrants. PS. If we must be responsible for the welfare of the Mexican people. . . .I say Annex Mexico. It is not a "poor" nation, it has minerals, water, farmland, thousands of miles of seacoast, oil, etc etc. etc.
We can send their leaders along with the cash they currently have off to Switzerland.
Annex Mexico. The people are us.
Oh yes we must blame the invasion on the average, ordinary american. . . . . as if. . . .
and Dock, If you know any illegal immigrant workers, you know their life here is not very good.
Oh, by the way,
We do have hundreds of thousands of legal immigrant refugees. . . .they are all on welfare.
