For dalliance in this muse of Mankind,
The last Orpheus can but mime in our
Hard end time--
By giving that shall too be spent:
On no reverie he lends in his unordinary
Lent.
As Abel he offers the world
Not a lamb's fleece:
He thinks much of this word,
Then denies as unwise the sacrifice
As he dreads a certain Word.
Beyond both heavens
And at a true Father's side,
Proffers not but lends--
Against His promise that cannot lie;
And does not tarry to be last
(Cain delighted in such deference).
And each man since tells his lies:
Which deeds shore up decayed
And decaying mortals time.
