WASHINGTON (AP) - Harriet Miers, who withdrew her nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court, was not treated very well, Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., says.
"I regret she didn't have the opportunity to come before the Judiciary Committee and make her case," Dorgan told The Associated Press on Thursday. "She was not treated very well in this process."
President Bush said he had reluctantly accepted Miers' decision to withdraw.
This is just Dorgan echoing the talking points being pushed by his DNC bosses. Regardless of whether or not the Dems actually supported Miers, they're going to paint themselves as being satisfied with her now so that they can call the conservative base (who largely opposed Miers) a "bunch of extremist meanies" who have "usurped the judicial nomination process in order to shove one of their extremist, right-wing judges down our throats."
Or something long those lines anyway.
To which I say: phooey. When it came down to hearings the Dems wouldn't have supported Miers. She is as unknown a quantity to them as she was to the Republican base, so they would have opposed her based on her rather obvious stance on the abortion issue and her religious views. Saying that they were satisfied with her and then implying that they won't be satisfied with whatever "extremist" is nominated next is purely opportunism and posturing.
