I was talking to a friend of mine today. Just reminiscing over the good old days, when we both worked for a particularly loathsome employer. We naturally got on the subject of people named Ragu, and he told me this story.
It seems he once knew a girl who worked for a Big Pharma company. She was just a lowly office worker, and one of her responsibilities was to book people to speak at exciting pharma conferences. One of the spokespeople for her company - and also, supposedly, a customer for some sort of brain tonic - was Squiggy. Yes, from Laverne and Shirley. Her job entailed calling him up and booking him to speak at these conferences.
I flashed on this image: you're a tired office worker at a pharmaceutical company. Your employer sends you to go to a conference. Let's say it's in Vegas. You fly in at some ungodly early hour, and sit, bleary-eyed, through endless sessions. The speakers drone on. It's all very dull, as conferences are wont to be. You march from session to session, eating some not-memorable food, and drinking some oily black coffee on the way. Suddenly you look up, jarred out of your reverie about the pattern of floor tiles beneath the chair in front of you by a voice that speaks to you, for the briefest moment, straight out of your childhood of lazy afternoons with the TV. You look up. It takes you a moment to decide, but yes, it's Squiggy, there at the podium.
I might decide I'd finally gone completely insane. Or that this was the moment to whip out my camera phone and start recording this. But I guess, at this point in my life, I wouldn't really be surprised.
Now, if the Fonz came up and joined him, I'd lose it.
