As editor-in-chief of Gather, I will from time to time help people find what they are looking for, give tips on what works for the Gather community, and let you know about cool tools we've created that you can take advantage of. This week I want to encourage you to try two things - write something that is on your mind, and invite people to read it.
It might be obvious to the current writers on the site that this is an open forum for anything that is on your mind. A review of a new restaurant, reflections on a walk through your neighborhood, your disdain or support for a political figure. The goal on Gather is to express youself - your grammar, your perspective, your topic. There is so much that people observe and reflect on, but rarely do we have an opportunity to share it with others. On Gather, the writers and readers are informed, forward-looking, inquisitive, and sometimes playful in their writing. I encourage you readers out there to try it out - comment on an article, post a photo. You'll be pleasantly surprised how valuable all comments on Gather can be. I have already gotten feedback from Gather members who have done so, and they have made new friends already. What did they have in common? Knitting for two people, politics for two others. And one person of the site got a wide range of comments on his first article, almost entirely from people he didn't know before. Now they are watching for each others' next post.
The next thing I encourage you to do after writing something is to show it to others. Connect to people already on Gather whom you find interesting, who read the same books you do, or to friends of your friends that you have always wanted to meet. If they are not on Gather but you think they would enjoy what you have to say, invite them (its under the "Connect" tab above) and start to share a corner of yourself with people you know, and people you want to know.
Its that simple - Write and Invite. The full benefits of being on Gather involve sharing yourself and your perspective. You've signed up, so give it a try.
Thanks!
