Singapore Libel
"The Economist" magazine has become the latest foreign news organization to fall foul of Singapore's defamation laws. The magazine has apologized to the country's Prime Minister and agreed to pay $250,000 in damages over an article published last month. But press freedom advocates have criticized both sides of the dispute: Singapore for what they call repression, and "The Economist" and other western media outlets for "caving in."
